lets say that i am trying to assassinate someone and they playfully shoot me, perhaps because we know each other.
i have not given myself away as their assassin yet. do i have to give myself away as their assassin and inform them that i'm now in a coma? or can i just play along and keep them in the dark, but just not shoot them for another 24 hours?

Shoot first, ask questions later, followed by more shooting.

Let me get this straight. You're asking whether or not subterfuge/deceit/bold-faced lies/betrayal and the like are legal in a game where people are trying to kill each other?
In short, heck yes. If you can decieve your target, so much the better. I was still unsure the first week whether or not the person chasing me that I shot was actually my assassin. Of course, if you were to shoot someone else, don't lie and say that you were really their assassin. That's lame, and not cool.
So yeah, even though you wouldn't be able to shoot them, there's no reason to spill the beans. Lie away. I'm glad someone mentioned this.

I would say that you are still in a comma, but are under no obligation to inform them of this fact.

Me too, that would mean that you have lost all secrecy in the game. Let him shoot you, laugh about it. Then wait 24 hours and 86'em. Have a nice day
